Outline and Instructions for the Famous Person Speech Project

2nd Project - We started working on our second project, an autobiographical speech of a famous person born in our Spanish speaking country, on Tuesday the 20th. On Wednesday and Thursday I have given instruction and help with writing the speech. Some of the speech is in English and some in Spanish, according to the outline and example below. Students will not turn in the speech to me, but will perform it for their grade, so they are encouraged to write it on note cards or in any format that will make it easier for them to recite. They do not need to memorize their speech, but should practice it enough so that it flows smoothly and so they can occasionally make eye contact with their audience. They should also show a picture of their famous person while they are speaking.

The speech will be performed for a 35 point grade on Monday the 26th. Any student who is absent on that day MUST perform the speech to me as soon as they return to school. If a student attends school that day but is not prepared to speak, they will receive a zero on this assignment. Here is the format to follow:

1) Greet us in Spanish
2) Give us the full name of your person, using me llamo (see the example below)
3) Give us the birth date and place of your person (see example) in Spanish
4) Tell us in English 3 reasons why that person is famous, or why should we care about them? These should be famous accomplishments.
5) Tell us in English 3 important events in their life - these should be events important to that person such as marriage, kids, education accomplishments, etc.
6) If your person has died, tell us in Spanish the date of their death and place (see example). If your person is still alive, tell us in Spanish how old they are.
7) End with a Spanish farewell such as hasta luego.

Example:
Buenos dias clase. Me llamo Jose Lopez Antonio de Santa Ana. Naci el cinco de enero, 1820 en Veracruz, Mexico. I am famous because I was the president of Mexico three times, I led the Mexican forces against the Texans at the Alamo, and I led the Mexican Army against the invading US forces during the Mexican American war in 1848. In my life I had much pain and sadness. I was married in 1840 but my first wife passed away. I was wounded in battle in 1842 and lost one of my legs. Thereafter I had to use a fake leg that always gave me pain. After my army was defeated, the Mexican government kicked me out of Mexico and I fled to Spain. It was a difficult time for me but I have always tried to be loyal and serve my country. Mori el tres de octubre, 1872 en Oaxaca, Mexico. Muchas gracias y hasta luego.

Alternate Assignment for Country Food Project

Explanation: Students who choose not to make or purchase food from their Latin American country to bring to the Food Festival on March 30th may do this alternate assignment. This assignment is due the same day as the food festival (Friday the 30th of March) and is worth the same amount of points (35). Failure to turn in this assignment OR bring the food by the due date will result in a zero for this project.

Assignment:
• Gather together 4 recipes for food from your Latin American country. You may cut/paste them onto a Microsoft Word document or you may copy them by hand onto a lined sheet of paper.
• Your first recipe should be for a dessert – make sure to include the name of the food, all the ingredients, and how to prepare it.
• Your other three recipes can be for main dishes, snacks, or other types of food. Make sure to include the name of the food, all the ingredients, and how to prepare it (for each recipe)
• After the 4 recipes, write a short paragraph in your own words that describes which of these recipes you would try to cook if you were able to do so. Tell me why you chose these 4 recipes and which one sounds the tastiest to you. Make sure to put your name on your paper!
